FAITH – HOPE – FORGIVENESS by Growing Older

Sharing The Message Of Christ

John 4:5-15

Introduction: Remember the old adage “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink?”

Years ago, a young salesman, after losing a big sale, made such a statement. The sales manager told him: “Your job is not to make him drink, but to make him thirsty, then he will drink.”

As Christians, our job is to expose the thirst for the living water of Christ, to the hearts and souls of unsaved people. Our lives should be filled Christ so that we can literally create a thirst for the love of God in the lives of unbelievers.  The message of Christ has not changed since the first century.  II Timothy 1:9.

Jesus had a purpose in coming to this earth – to die for our sins and then to rise again from the grave for our justification.  John 20:21 – Jesus said that He sends us to serve Him, to share the Gospel with folks that we come into contact with.

Christ’s Purpose In Coming To This Earth

Luke 19:10 –  John 4:1-5 Jesus shared an eternal Truth with a woman in need.

Vs 4 – He must .. go through Samaria.

Jesus felt compelled to go this route. He was following the leading of the Holy spirit.

Psalm 27:23 (steps of good man are ordered)

Jesus purpose of reaching unsaved folks, took Him to a necessary place where there was a spiritual need.

Have you ever had an impulse to go to a particular place or route or to a particular person to speak to them about Jesus?

Jesus went to the well at Sychar (John 4:5) – He had a divine appointment arranged by the Heavenly Father.

When you live your life according to the purpose of Christ, there are no accidents.

The Lord wants us to be a witness to others and He will often lead us, by Divine appointments, to represent Him to others.

In our text, Jesus Divine appointment took Him to a needy woman.

John 4:7-10 (read).

This woman was not a Christian

She had marital problems and did not live a life of high moral standards.

Probably the subject of ridicule and gossip.

John 4:7 Jesus ask her  …for a drink.

Why did He ask of her?

So He could offer her something even greater. Jesus was offering living water – and forgiveness of sins.

Jesus came to quench the thirst of a world without salvation – Matthew 9:12.

The Promise Of Christ To Those Who Receive His Gift

John 4:10 – God gives a special promise to those who receive His gift.

Romans 6:23 “… the gift of God is eternal life through jesus Christ our Lord.”

God’s gift is not for a select few but freely offered to a world / society … living in sin and in sinful conditions.

John 4:9 – Racial tension was high between the Jews and Samaritans. Most Jews would have never stopped to talk to this woman …. She wasn’t worth it.

Jesus stopped … she was worth His time and His effort. She needed salvation.

This shows the amazing and impartial love of God for all peoples.

Vs 15-18 – Jesus met her where she was … a sinner.

He couldn’t help her until she admitted her need for salvation.

Jesus brought her face to face with this – vs 14-15

The devil makes folks who live in wickedness and immorality feel as if there is no hope – that God does not love them. But Christ died for everyone and there is hope and God does offer forgiveness to all people – not just a few.

God’s Power To Provide Salvation

Jesus came with a promise and with power to fulfill that promise.

Once He saves us, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in the Christian forever.

He gives us the power to share the message of hope and salvation – forgiveness of sins.

John 4:28-29 – She left her water pot and began to witness to others about the saving power of Christ.

If we really believed God’s promise, we too would be more apt to leave our waterpots =   comfort zone … hobbies … recreations … things that would distract us from being a witness for Christ.

Jesus went out of His way to go … He followed the Spirit’s leading.

The vast majority of folks in our area do not attend a Bible believing church. Most do not know Christ as Saviour and many have never heard that God really does love them and offers forgiveness of sins.

Many live in hopeless situations and feel helpless.

Their need is why God put you and me here = to share the message of salvation.

In our community, there are men & woman – boys & girls seeking life changes but have no idea of where to turn.

You have the answer. Go make someone thirsty by sharing with them the Truth of Christ.  Let them see a Christ likeness in you.
